Ed Sheeran released his new album, “÷”, on March 3, which is his first album since 2014’s “Multiply”. Sheeran is known for naming his albums after mathematical symbols, so this was no surprise. However, he did surprise his fans after a year-long hiatus with two new songs: “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill”.
“Shape of You” is a catchy song about falling in love the idea of a woman. He sings about a new romance and the growing intimacy between him and a woman. The song’s bouncy tune and clever lyrics contribute to its wide appeal. Sheeran said the song is intended for women of all shapes and sizes. At this year’s Grammys, he performed this song while mixing the music onstage with a guitar and a loop pedal, showcasing his artistic talent.
“Castle on the Hill”, tells the classic coming-of-age story that every young adult goes through. He evokes a sense of nostalgia from the audience, of wanting to go back to the simpler times when he was younger. Using percussion and a gradual increase in volume, Sheeran allows people to fall head over heels in love with the song.
Another well-known song on the album is “Happier”, which is a ballad that describes the pain of seeing an ex happy in a relationship with someone else. In the song, Sheeran expresses the pain of putting someone else’s happiness in front of your own. He sings “Promise that I will not take it personal, baby… If you’re moving on with someone new”. The song starts off slow and the music begins to intensify like a crescendo, making it a good song to cry to.
One of the fan favorites of this album is “Perfect”, the new song that couples will be listening to and playing at weddings. Singing about a childhood love that became something more, Sheeran makes the song even more beautiful with his classic acoustic guitar and a solid set of drums.
Something different that Sheeran integrated into his album this time is Irish folk. Diving back into his roots and his true background, he incorporated the songs “Galway Girl” and “Nancy Mulligan”. Using the typical instruments used in an Irish band (the fiddle, a pipe, a bodhrán, and piano), he creates a folk sound he has never tried before.
One of the most underrated favorites of “÷” is “Dive,” a song about a boy who is afraid to let himself fall for someone new. The buildup going from the verses to the chorus is something beautiful, with the electric guitar slowly strumming in the background to provide for added effect. Sheeran adds a blues twist on this something, making it all the more special.
Critics of the album claim that Sheeran is perhaps playing it too safe, with lyrics pertaining to his audience of young females and saying the same cliche story of falling in love young. However, Sheeran simply uses his own experience as a reflection for his songs, as any other artist does. In fact, the inspiration behind many of the songs on the album is his current girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn.
Right now, Sheeran is at an all-time high, and he knows it too.
“I think this year is going to be the high point. I have a feeling about it,” Sheeran said.
“÷” has had commercial success and fans were generally pleased with the album. With his music staying at the top of the charts, fans love it with the bottom of their hearts.
