On Thursday, March 22, 2018, popular canadian pop artist Shawn Mendes released a song titled “In My Blood.” The song was later followed by another Mendes song called “Lost in Japan,” which was released the next day.

“In My Blood” clearly moves away from Mendes’ comfort zone, as he usually sings about his relationships with women, and how he feels about them. But in this song, Mendes turns to how he feels when he is in his deepest points in life and feeling overwhelmed or anxious. He shows his anxiety by singing the lines “Help me, it’s like the walls are caving in,” and “Laying on the bathroom floor, feeling nothing. I’m overwhelmed and insecure, give me something.” In a recent interview with Billboard’s Zane Lowe, Mendes spoke about his anxiety and how it affects him and his career as a famous pop star, astoundingly loved my millions.

“[Anxiety] was kind of something that hit me last year,” Mendes said in the Billboard interview, “Growing up, I was a pretty calm kid. I knew people who suffered from anxiety but it was hard to understand. And then when it hits you, you’re like ‘Oh my god, this is crazy!’”

Mendes also changed his style not just by topic, but by feel. Mendes’ past songs had the usual ‘pop’ feel that you would expect from a song by any early twenty-first century pop artist. But “In My Blood” brings Mendes’ music into more of a rock feel. On the first day of studio sessions, Mendes knew he wanted dramatic change in “In My Blood” to make it stand out.

“We walked in the first day and we wrote ‘In My Blood,’” Mendes told Zane. “When we walked in, I was like, I want to make a Kings of Leon record. I want to go more rock.”

The day after “In My Blood” was released, Mendes shocked the entertainment world with another astonishing song he called “Lost in Japan.” An R&B song in which he sings about falling for a woman in Japan, he sings about how he would do anything to get there to be with her. In the song, Mendes sings the lyrics “Do you have plans tonight? I’m a couple hundred miles from Japan, and I was thinking I could fly to your hotel tonight.” The song, although a different style than “In my Blood,” shares the same kind of emotion as shown in “In my Blood.” They both reel in his emotion on feeling alone and anxious about the uncertainty that comes with having loved ones in life. In an interview on the Zach Sang show, Mendes discussed why he dropped two songs in a row with different genres.

“I started making music differently everyday,” Mendes told Sang. “I would wake up, and I’d want it to be like Justin Timberlake, and the next day I’d want it to be like Kings of Leon, and the next day I’d want to be like Ed Sheeran, so I realised that’s the way I consume music.”

Mendes’ fans know that he makes music to express emotion as most artists do. The combination of the two genres of these two songs is the best way to express how he feels about music.

“The first song being more rock, and the second one being way more R&B is the perfect explanation of how one day you wake up feeling like someone and the next day you wake up feeling like someone else,” Mendes told Sang.

Since their releases, these two new songs have recently become quite popular in the music industry, racking up an average of 30 million hits on YouTube per song. The release date for Mendes’ next full album is May 25, and surely leaves Mendes’ fans wanting more from their favorite artist. So Mendes fans, rest assured: even more of your favorite music is soon to come.
