Due to poor weather conditions, the boys golf team has had a rough time getting on the course. In the beginning of the season, the course was covered with snow. The snow was followed up with lots of rain, which caused course to be unplayable. The team had to stay inside and was unable to get the practice they needed. First season coach Jeff Drake agrees that the weather has affected the team’s ability to get better.

“It affected us a lot, and it was very tough. You need to be on the course to practice golf, and it is very hard to be inside, and we haven’t had a spot in the gym to practice after school…The more you play the better you get,” Drake said.

In addition to forcing the team to stay inside, the weather causes other problems when playing on the home course.

“You need to get a feel for your home course. So, it’s very hard to see and then adjust things inside when you’re hitting a ball into a net,” Drake said.

The team started on the down side, with a record of 1-11. During the one win against Hamilton West, the whole Hightstown squad shot better than the other team. Leading the charge was sophomore Ryan Trent who shot a 46, followed by senior Daniel Burgess with a 49.

Senior Taylor Fox shared some words on the team.

“Drake’s doing a great job coaching and is teaching us ways to play better. What affected our record is that all the starters besides myself and and Ryan Trent graduated last year,” Fox said.

  Despite the weather,

The team has made tremendous progress this year, from shooting a 311 as a team in the first match to shooting a 185 in their best.”

They are now playing 130 strokes better, so the team is now competing with their rivals.

In addition to the returning players from last year,  joining them on the green are ex-baseball players Dan Burgess and Tyler Goslin, as well as three freshman: Kyle Bussone-Peterson, Samay Dubey, and Tejan Patel. This year can be considered a rebuilding year, with only a few of the kids leaving and a young team coming back for next year.

The team has been playing the best teams within their conference, so there is still hope to end the season strong. The team is young and still has a lot of room for growth.

The team has made a strong connection with one another this year as well. An example of this is the bet made between Fox and Drake on Fox’s best scores

“[My best] has been a 42, but I made a bet with Drake that I have to shoot better or I’ll shave my eyebrows,” Fox said.

The athletes are looking strong nearing the end of the season and hope to finish with a few wins and new best scores. The team is working hard every day and are determined to better themselves despite some of the hardships they have encountered this season.
