Three new coaches were added to the staff of the spring track and field team at Hightstown. Head Coach Megan Peterson and Coach Stacey Leppas are new coaches for the distance team. Brandon Brocklehurst is the new coach for jumpers. The new coaches have been implementing changes in order to better the program and the athletes in it.

All three of the coaches have had previous experience coaching either track or another sport. Coach Peterson has coached Track and Cross Country in Pittsburgh, PA and Seattle, WA. Coach Leppas has coached at a summer camp for younger kids, and Coach Brocklehurst has coached football at West Windsor Plainsboro South.

“The Coaches are very knowledgeable,” sophomore Caitlin Yang said.

The new distance coaches, Leppas and Peterson have changed the way practices are structured, starting with the warm-up. The warm-up is designed to help the athletes get ready for their work outs that day. The coaches also added new exercises to help prepare them. Intensity of the work outs has also increased to encourage the athletes to do their best.

“It has been fun to watch them progress each practice and meet. I’m really enjoying coaching with this wonderful group of coaches that have been assembled.  I’m learning a lot from all of them and enjoy the camaraderie,” Peterson said.

As well as learning from their own student-athletes, the coaches hope to improve and teach the athletes something new.

“My hope is that I can share my passion for track and field with our athletes. Running has been, and will continue to be, a lifelong sport for me. It is part of the healthy lifestyle I want our athletes to subscribe to,” Leppas said.

Instead of having spring track be a one season sport for kids, the coaches want these warm-ups and exercises to become a part of their athletes’ daily lives.

While some changes have been implemented, the coaches also wish to see what they will learn and make changes based on how the season goes. Brocklehurst was asked if he plans to change anything for the future.

“…I plan to, based on feedback from my athletes at the end of the year, but I plan to make changes at the end of the year,” Brocklehurst said.

Junior A.J. Pandina believes that with these new coaches will come new school records. “I believe this will contribute to many big PR’s (personal records) for many of us on the team. There will be big things to come for sure and hopefully some school records!”
