After finishing the 2016-2017 season with an overall record of 16 wins and 12 losses and a conference record of 4 wins and 0 losses, the wrestling team looks to have even greater success in this upcoming season.

With returning senior wrestlers Johnny Andre and Christian Charache, the team has set high goals and the wrestlers have set even higher personal goals.

Last season, Andre finished with 33 wins and only 6 losses. Eighteen of those wins were also pins, showing Andre is a force to be reckoned with this upcoming season.

Charache is coming off of a 25 and 8 season where he found himself in the number one spot at the district tournament last year. This season, he plans on hitting 100 career wins in addition to qualifying for the state tournament.

The team also has several rising stars that will make a great impact on the team this year, one of which is sophomore Kether Thornton. Thornton had a great showing his sophomore year with 20 wins, but he looks for an even better upcoming season.

“My goal for this season is to get over 30 wins, 10 more than last year, and go to regions,” Thornton said.

Another new member of the team is freshmen Logan Farish who will be wrestling in the 113 pound weight class.

With wrestling being a sport where weight classes are issued, wrestlers attempt to wrestle at the lowest weights they can in order to have an edge over their opponents in hopes of being stronger than them while being at the same weight. This, however, presents an omnipresent struggle to lose weight before the season and maintain that number throughout the season.

“Our team still needs to figure out our starting lineup for the year, and some of us are still working on getting our weights down,” Charache said.

Thornton describes just how hard it is to keep weight.

“Personally it is difficult to be with all of my friends who are eating whatever they want,” Thornton said. “But I like to make sacrifices in order to benefit myself.”

The team has high hopes for the upcoming season and have victory in their minds. To do this however the team must come together and be there for one another.

“We need to believe in the same goals. We have the talent and easily the best team since I’ve been at HHS, we just need to focus,” Charache said.

Thornton believes the one thing that will ensure success is getting pins when the team can in order to get as many points as possible in each match. In doing this, the team will have no problem reaching their goals.

This year’s wrestling team is full of talent, young and old. To achieve success, they must come together and help one another work their hardest and keep their goals in mind. The wrestlers believe this may be one if the most successful season in Hightstown history and with the talent they have, this is far from just a blank statement.
